Creating Dice Against Mice

Hi,

I'm writing this devlog after submitting my game "Dice Against Mice" to the GMTK Game Jam 2022. At the end of this devlog you can find a list of all the tools I used to make this game.

Day 1:

I spent a bit of time (probably too much time!) coming up with an idea that would work. I settled on the idea of having to get the total of a set of dice higher than your opponent's set; this eventually changed to guessing if the total of your dice is higher or lower than your opponents. I then spent the rest of day 1 creating the core mechanics of the game like being able to generate dice, guess higher or lower, see your dice and your opponents dice. Originally, seeing your dice or your opponents dice was going to be a one-time use, however, I decided to change that on day 2 because I didn't like the idea of part of the game just being pure guessing (as you'd have to win 3 rounds with only two chances to stack the odds in your favour). I also created the dice face sprites.

Day 2:

On day 2, my main focus was on the art and music. I decided to go with a cat and mouse for the characters as they fit into the roles of predator and prey; I chose this as it would give a reason for them to be fighting. I then created the menu and game over screens (one for winning and one for losing). Finally, I quickly created some music as I was starting to get low on time. On this day, I also added the font which I created for a previous game jam.

What I would have liked to include:

If I had more time to work on this game, I would have liked to include some sound effects to different events (buttons pressed, dice revealed, score incremented, etc). I would also have liked to add some dialog to give context to the game instead of having to put the context in the description of the game page.

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed taking part in this game jam and making this game. It gave me the chance to improve on my skills and I definitely learned a few things as well. This was my first 50 hour jam and it was very fun trying to make a game in the time.
